This year's National Day holiday slot saw disappointing box office results with films grossing an estimated 420 million yuan (US$ 66 million), only a 20-percent increase over the corresponding period last year, the Guangzhou Daily reports.
From September 30 to October 7, about 20 foreign and domestic film productions were screened in mainland's cinemas, including the wuxia film "Tai Chi 0," the historical film "The Assassins," the romance "Dangerous Liaisons" and the co-production "Looper." But none of them garnered satisfying box office earnings, according to the report.
"Tai Chi 0," which topped last week's box office charts, earned a mere 100 million yuan during the National Day holiday week. "The Assassins," starring Chow Yun-fat, only earned around 80 million yuan.
Production companies expected it to be much higher than that.
The statistics indicate that the number of moviegoers rose no more than 10 percent during the holiday period, while the number of screening timeslots grew 50 percent compared to the last National Day holiday week.
