According to enFilmbase's China film boxoffice statistics, the mainland boxoffice gross in the 31th week of 2012 (July 30- Aug 05) was $45.73 million, a minor decrease of 1% from the previous week. Moviegoers this week totaled 8.28 million, a slight growth of 1% when compared to the previous week's numbers.
"Ice Age: Continental Drift" reigned over the boxoffice chart for another week with $24.22 million over the past week, while it totaled $44.85 million as of last Sunday in mainland theaters. Imported action film "The Mechanic" had a good debut with $7.92 million over four days in release. Another Hollywood title "Abduction" raked in $4.08 million in the past week, while it totaled $7.81 million in ten days in release. Domestic blockbuster "Painted Skin: The Resurrection" added $1.61 million for a total of $115.07 million in its sixth week of release. Thanks to the top one and top two titles of the chart, foreign films were back to reign supreme over the boxoffice market, accounting for 82% of the weekly gross.
In the second half of the summer time slot, several imported films broke down the domination by domestic films on boxoffice market. Co-produced by 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studio, the latest entry of franchise film "Ice Age: Continental Drift" continued its strong performance, adding $ 24.22 million for a total of $ 44.85 million in its second week of release, enjoying a growth of 17% when compared to the previous week's boxoffice number. The fourth installment is proved to be the second-highest grossing title among the genre of animated films in mainland China, only sitting behind "Kung Fu Panda 2".
Imported action film "The Mechanic", directed by Simon West and starring Jason Statham had a good debut with $7.92 million boxoffice over four days in release. The cutthroat storyline along with the tough-guy image of Jason Statham, made the newcomer successfully took money from audiences' wallets. Another Hollywood title "Abduction" ended its second week of release at number three on the boxoffice chart, adding $4.08 million for a total of $7.81 million. "Painted Skin: The Resurrection" continued to draw $1.61 million this past week, while its accumulated boxoffice receipts reached $115.07 million. Homegrown thriller "Bunshinsaba" added $1.06 million for a total of $9.3 million in its third week of release, which score is good enough to make the thriller become the second-highest grossing film in the genre of thrill, historically in mainland China, following closely behind "Mysterious Island" (2011)
