    Lust
    Machismo
    Turbulance

Returning to Berlin competition after his Mongolian drama Tuya's Marriage won the Golden Bear in 2007, Chinese director Wang Quan'an ambitiously brings Chen Zhongshi's sweeping 1993 historical novel White Deer Plain,an epic tale of two peasant families, to the big screen.

"White Deer Plain" is set in Shaanxi Province. Spanning a century, it follows three generations of two local influential families surnamed Bai and Lu, as they fight over a piece of coveted land.

The more than three hours' long movie puts the lives of China's northwestern peasants on full display as it recounts the hardships of Shaanxi farmers during periods of social turbulence and historical junctures, while mirroring the radical upheaval gripping the Chinese countryside during the first half of the 20th century.
