Asian Buyers Rush for Cannes Titles

Asian distributors have dived in to make rights acquisitions of several key films that appear in the different section of the Cannes festival, which gets underway next week.

Opening film, Moonrise Kingdom (pictured) by Wes Anderson, with its starry cast including Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand and Ed Norton, has proved an unsurprising favourite.

With sales handled by Focus Features, the film was sold to Universal Pictures for Australia, Deltamac for Hong Kong; PVR for India; PT Amero Mitra Film for Indonesia; Phantom Film for Indonesia, Shaw Renters for Singapore; SSG for Taiwan SSG and M Pictures for Thailand.

Patrice Leconte's The Suicide Shop 3D, by French director Patrice Leconte, which gets an outing as an 'official selection – special screening' was acquired by South Korea's Lotte Entertainment from sales agency Wild Bunch.

Journal de France, by documentary specialists Claudine Nougaret and Raymond Depardon, which also shows as an official selection, special screening, was picked up for South Korea by distributor Challan, and for Taiwan by Flash Forward. Sales are represented by Wild Bunch.

Taiwan's Swallow Wings picked up rights to Wild Bunch's Beyond The Hills, the Romanian drama written and directed by Cristian Mungiu, which has its premier in main competition. The distributor also picked up rights to another Wild Bunch title, Un Certain Regard film White Elephant, by Argentinian director and Cannes regular Pablo Trapero.

Main competition film Rust & Bone, reported to be the final film by veteran French director Jacques Audiard, was picked up for Australia by Hopscotch/eOne Entertainment. Sales are handled by Celluloid Dreams.

Renoir, the closing film in Un Certain Regard, directed by Gilles Bourdos, was acquired from Wild Bunch, for Australia and New Zealand by Transmission Films, for Japan by Comstock and for South Korea by Peter Pan Pictures.
