The selection by the Directors' Fortnight Quinzaine des réalisateurs section means that three more Asian films will be attending next month's Cannes festival.
The sidebar, run by the French directors association, has selected "The King of Pigs", an adult animation film by Yeon Sang-ho that premiered last year at the Busan International Film Festival; gangster revenge drama Gangs of Wasseypur, by India's Anurag Kashyap; and "Dangerous Liaisons", a 1930s Shanghai-set Chinese retelling of the French literary classic of the same name. It is directed by South Korea's Hur Jin-ho.
Artistic director Edouard Waintrop said that the selection retains a familiar feel in that it ranges from experimental films through to genre pictures. But he added that this year's selection contains films by six first time directors and two documentarians turned fiction film-makers, creating plenty of room for surprise.
While Liaisons possibly has the greater star power – its cast included Zhang Ziyi, Cecilia Cheung and Jang Dong-geon, Wasseypur also packs its own talent punch. Its cast includes Manoj Bajpai and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
