The figures come from the motion picture association of America, which is also highlighting the growth in Chinese films.
The box office income of Chinese films reached 2 billion US dollars in 2011, a 35% increase compared to 2010. Despite the overall jump, the US and Canada saw a 4 percent decline in box office income.
Analysts say this was mainly due to the nature of the actual movie releases, with 2010 having been an exceptionally strong year due to 3D films such as Avatar.
