ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
A SEQUEL TO IF YOU ARE THE ONE: THE SECOND TIME IS THE BEST
The audience's passion for the 2008 blockbuster "If You Are the One" guarantees the popularity of a sequel. But at the same time, it puts a great deal of pressure on director Feng Xiaogang and his team. This is Feng's first time making a sequel: the pressure is to not only satisfy the audience's high expectations, but to make a better film than the original. Bringing famous "bad-boy" novelist Wang Shuo on board as a co-screenwriter provides a fresh imaginative voice and opens a range of new perspectives.
Like the original blockbuster hit "If You Are the One", this sequel is still focuses on the troubled romance of Qin Fen and Liao Xiaoxiao. This time around, their romantic tale is even more turbulent than the last. The first film's story revolved around how they got to know each other and finally decided to be together. This sequel gives them time to deal with life, friendship, and marriage, to "get rid of all illusions, in order to embrace true life".
A typical love story puts all the focus on the two lead characters. But life is actually not as simple as that. Their relationship with their friends is crucial. This is the second main thread of the film, the story of Qin and Xiaoxiao's friends Xiangshan (Sun Honglei) and Mango (Yao Chen). Their friends' relationship will ultimately influence Qin and Xiaoxiao's way of dealing with love. This is what connects the story to real life.
First they dated in "If You Are the One"; Qin and Xiaoxiao this time decided to live together to see whether they're really a good match. But their decision is still not a serious one. This is where the sequel starts: Feng Xiaogang and Wang Shuo created this script to tell a story of a post-romantic couple who force themselves to live together. Qin has to beg Xiaoxiao for her love. Unlike the original, they are now together only a short time before they split up, each heading off in her and his own way. Qin chases Xiaoxiao; and she finally becomes his nemesis.
From the very beginning Qin has fallen in love with Xiaoxiao, but Xiaoxiao is not sure she is in love with Qin. This sequel goes beyond their passion together, and explores how long they can live with each other without any false romance. The act of living itself is already a natural kind of meditation. The more you push, the worse the outcome. If the fate joins you with a person, then it is your karma to be together.
