Behind-the-Scenes footage of Tom Lin's film, 'Starry Starry Night' has been released. The film is based on the best-selling illustrated novel of the same name by a Taiwanese author and illustrator known only as "Jimmy".
The movie revolves around an autistic girl, Xiao Mei, who wants to escape from her miserable life. In order to do this, she escapes into her own idyllic fantasy world, but eventually she must face reality.
The Mainland's Huayi Brothers and Taiwan's Atom Cinema have teamed up for the project, which is thought to be the first Mainland-Taiwan film co-production. In the behind scenes footage, the original artist Jimmy, the producer Wang zhonglei, the supervisor Kuo-fu Chen, the director Tom Lin and the main cast tell viewers about how 'Starry Starry Night' went from a bestselling picture book to a movie. Although Lin's selection as director was controversial because he had only directed one movie previously, (The 2008 film 'Wind of September'), the choice was praised by Jimmy, who called Lin "a precocious filmmaking talent".
"I have always known that Tom is a good director, and I am amazed by how he was able develop the story into such a beautiful film, since the original illustrated novel was very simple," he said. "Tom has created an incredible world that's simultaneously surreal and real."
