Director Zhang Yimou's epic war film, "Heroes of Nanking" finished filming in Nanjing this Wednesday, June 22.
The lengthy shoot began filming at a Film and TV Production Base in Lishui county, Nanjing in January. It has lasted a total of 164 days in the same location. According to director Zhang Yimou, this film has taken the longest amount of time to shoot in one location in his filming career.
At a party to celebrate the end of the filming, Zhang Yimou said, "'Hero'[his 2002 Wuxia film] took 5 and a half months to film and was spread across various locations in five different provinces in China, while "Heroes of Nanking" just shot in Lishui county."
"I am very grateful to all the staff who worked so hard on the film in such an isolated location."
Zhang said emotively that his biggest hope for 2011 was to have a completed film which pleased both his staff and audiences across China.
Zhang will now go into the post-production stage of the film.
"Heroes of Nanking" is Zhang's first epic war film. The cast and crew include world-acclaimed film makers, with Oscar-winning actor Christian Bale as the lead. The special effects of the war scenes are supervised by Joss Williams, the special effects supervisor of "Band of Brothers."
The $100 million film is set to open in China on Dec 16.
