Betelnut (FIPRESCI winner, 31st HKIFF) director Yang Heng returns with a film even more stylistically adventurous and austere than his previous. Each tableau like scene unfolds like a puzzle piece, with the drama contained within the vast interior of each stunningly composed long shot. Only after a while do the pieces form into a semblance of a plot, which involves a lawless young gangster and his love triangle. But the visuals are the focus here, and few filmmakers are able to capture the landscape of a changing China as well as Yang Heng.
