Amreeka, which is Arabic for America, follows Muna, a non-religious Palestinian and a single mother, as she fulfills her dream of emigrating with her son Fadi to the United States. But their arrival, just after the start of the Iraq war, is inopportune, and their life in small-town Illinois is punctuated with discrimination as well as hope. Far from a political diatribe, this is instead a heartwarming film about a headstrong woman who tackles the absurdities of life with determination and humour. Lead actress Nisreen Faour is simply captivating. FIPRESCI prize, Cannes Director's Fortnight.
