Experimental shorts director Chris Chong Chan Fui's acclaimed first feature-length film went straight to Cannes and won a number of awards along the way. This poetic and insightful allegory uses karaoke videos as a device to juxtapose a young man's na?ve expectations with the reality of returning home to the countryside. Segued into this tale is a sumptuous sequence in which palm is being processed, recalling Jia Zhangke's Useless. But amusing highlights include a karaoke "making of" scene that is accompanied by catchy 80s-style pop music expressly written for the film.
