Takiji Kobayashi's 1929 novel about a proletarian uprising aboard a crab cannery ship might seem like a strange choice for a modern film adaptation, but with capitalism in crisis, there is no better time. In the hands of Sabu, the result is intentionally postmodern, inventively humorous and always full of surprises. The ever-charismatic Matsuda Ryuhei stars as Shinjo, the would-be leader of the mutineers, who urges his fellow shipmates to commit mass suicide. Instead, they end up meeting with vodka-swilling Russians - a model of equality, perhaps? The claustrophobic setting and colourful art direction contribute greatly to the irreverent atmosphere.
