The two-part Chengdu, I Love You was commissioned as a love letter to the titular city after the Sichuan province was struck by last year's deadly earthquake. Veteran musician Cui Jian makes his directorial debut with the futuristic first segment, 2029. It blends rock music, martial arts and sci-fi special effects to tell a story that began with the 2008 earthquake. Acclaimed director Fruit Chan helms the 2nd part, titled 1976, about a manic young teahouse master who falls for his waitress during the Cultural Revolution. It's a vision of China from the past, as well as from the future.
