Director : Clara Law | 2009 | Putonghua/English | Colour | 118min
Cast: Daniel Wu, Yolanda Yuan
Like a Dream is the long-awaited return by Clara Law to narrative feature filmmaking since 2000's The Goddess of 1967. And like the director herself, who now splits her time between Australia and Chinese territories, the film's protagonist is caught in a cross-continent fable that spans Shanghai, New York and Taipei. Daniel Wu, in one of his most naturalistic roles to date, plays an American-born Chinese who dreams of a traumatized woman in Shanghai. One day, he decides to look for her, but instead encounters a country bumpkin who may just be her doppelganger. Dark, fable-like yet romantic, the film also features an impressive turn by Yolanda Yuan in a dual role.
